In the year 1930’s Miami’s hotbed had a much emerging fishing scene and the well known
history of Fin-Nor Fishing Reels also relates to that period. During this period, many people in the field of

of the owners Mr. Finley and Mr. Norwood. They owned a machine shop in Miami where the first Fin-Nor fishing reel
was produced in the year 1933.
The collaborator in this reel design was Captain Tommy Gifford. The weight of the first
reel so produced was about 35 pounds and its size was big enough to fill a huge water bucket. Captain Gifford was
successful in catching a 527 pound Blue fin Tuna with this reel and this was the take off sign for Fin-Nor which
never looked back from there.
So, the legacy years of Fin-Nor are marked as the history of this unmatchable reel that
became a benchmark in the fishing sport and also became known popularly as the ‘Gold Standard’ of Saltwater reels.
With legendary characters backing the use of the reel, Fin-Nor gained extreme popularity amongst anglers and the
story of Fin-Nor also became popular as the ‘Rolls Royce of Big Game Fishing Reels’.
The Fin-Nor fishing reels became even more popular and its reputation for high quality
and intricate craftsmanship increased when Alfred Glassell, Jr, made his record catch of a 1560 pound Black Marlin
in Cabo Blanco in the country of Peru in the year 1953.This was caught during the filming of ‘Old man and the Sea’
a documentary by Hemingway and till now it is the biggest Black Marlin that was caught and whose records are
available with the International Game Fish Association. Fin-Nor Fishing reels have about 380 world big game fishing
records to it’s credit that includes the largest Swordfish and the largest Black Marlin that has ever been caught
by any fishing reel.
